RESTORATIO OF TAPESTRY The washing
Firstable proceeds to the sampling of the respective yarns colors that will be classified, numbered and inserted in test-tubes to verify the stability of the color, in water and in the surfactant. After It will effect a coverage of zones mostly degraded zone with a flexible and soft synthetic net, sewn in both the sides, to protect against the water mechanical action ans it will be stopped the mobile perimeters.
The washing is performed with decalcified water and natural surfactant that will be diffused in the tub with air jets and following regular watering (soft and continued) that will produce a delicate movement of the water. To convey the idea: it's a kind of very light hydromassagge. An action with sponge bath on both the sides. Then it makes a rinse with decalcified water to the total elimination of the surfactant. For the drying the tapestry is horizontally suspended in a unhumid environment, with circulation of warm air.
The Restoration
Firstable the protective nets are removed insert for the washing; then it will be chosen the more proper method of restauration for the condition of textile: "integrative" (that don't recreate the images) if we think that the reconstruction of warp and weft and supports applying are the best way for the consolidation of tapestry. "Conservative" in the case in which is not possbile to use the integrative one: it's made applying in the back of tapestry some supports to give it toughness.
For how much our search on the most recent methodologies of restauration never ends, we are nevertheless aware of problematic aspects that these so delicate interventions involve. We look for therefore to give the maximum attention in all the phases of these methods. The restauration yarn will be of the same nature of the original one and with similar morphological characteristics. The yarn will be dyed with synthetic dyes premetallic, stable to the light and with a movement of toning, similar to that of the dyes on the ancient yarns. - The restitching of the open detaches of the tapestries will be performed on reverse as in the original technique
The Lining
At the end of restauration, we will proceed to the lining with a linen or cotton fabric with a harmonic color to the tonalities of the work. The lining will be sewn behind the tapestry with a series of alternate strings so that to get, once hung the fabric, a regular and uniform tension.
The tapestries are not never perfectly rights and squared, above all the notable dimensions one; once they are suspended they extend therefore to get ready in their natural inclination. To force this inclination means to cause new tractions that create new breakings.
The hung up
The hung up is made with strips in velcro 5 cms. tall, sewn on the back of the superior band and, if necessary also in the other zones, stopping both the velcro and the lining. In this way on reduce to the least the effort due to its same weight, it must stay suspended for years. Obviously the structure of support in wood on the wall will be made to be able the applying of "male" velcro in correspondence of that applied on the tapestry.
