The Shirwan Akstafa are rather rare carpets, probably knotted by an ethnic minority settled in the extreme south-west of the Shirwan region, almost on the border with Kazakhstan. This beautiful example from the late 19th century features the typical star medallions, the decorative elements alternating with copies of birds at the corners. Note the stylized animals at the bottom
